Hey guys! What have you been reading lately?
For me, it’s The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. As what I have mentioned in the last #BookishThursday post, I wasn’t really a bit fan of fantasy. But ever since I started reading The Wheel Of Time series, I was hooked. I started researching for newer books that are within the same genre. And let me tell you, what I found OVERWHELMED me. There are a lot of crazy good books out there.
Of all the books I’ve found, though, The First Law series, was the one that intrigued me most. And thank the gods for my curiousity because this book – and the entire First Law series – is awesome.
In fact, reading the whole book was so much fun that it even felt like a game to me. Let me explain.
Joe Abercrombie has this knack for writing a lot of sub-stories. Totally random stuff in between serious milestones or important events in the book. For instance, about a guy falling down a boat, just before Glokta, metaphorically speaking, got pushed into the water himself.
Aside from that, there were also other enjoyable clues as you see each character develop into the next lead character. Example, you can see Luthar developing to West developing to Glokta developing to Logen, and so forth. Unlike other books I’ve read where authors would literally spoon feed everything to you, The Blade Itself would give you subtle hints of what’s going to happen and force you to use your brain and, as Logen always says, “to be realistic about these things.”
Needless to say, it was a thoroughly enjoying read. The writing was straight and direct to the point (which I like). And I also listened to the audiobook version. Well done, Pacey! Your “Glokta voice” stalks my dreams at night.
I have fallen in love with Sand dan Glokta, you see. So much so that there are times I find myself wondering in random moments, what would Glokta do if he was in my position. When you fall in love and relate to a character like that, it’s hard to put a book down and stop reading.
By the way, I am also at Goodreads and a (semi)active member of the book group, The Perks Of Being A Book Addict. Check out my profile to see my complete book lists.
Finally, be sure to come back this Friday for another #FreebieFriday! This week, it’s a free printable quote and bookmark in line with this book. See you then!
